During World War II, Terrell became home to the first of six British Flying Training Schools
established in the United States under the Lend-Lease program. Opened in 1941, the No. 1
British Flying Training School (BFTS) trained Royal Air Force cadets far from the dangers of
wartime Britain. More than 2,200 British and American pilots earned their wings here, forging
bonds that endure to this day. The school was a vital link in the Allied effort, blending the
spirit of small-town America with the courage and determination of young aviators who would
go on to defend freedom around the world.

For over 20 years, the No. 1 BFTS Museum has continued to preserve this remarkable history
through exhibits, artifacts, including an airworthy Stearman Biplane that was used as a trainer
at the BFTS in Terrell, and personal stories that honor the men and women who served both in
the air and on the ground.
