Hummingbird Place
115 E. Moore Loft
2nd floor - Unit 205
Luis & Cynthia Piña

Tucked in the heart of historic downtown Terrell, Hummingbird Place is a beautiful example of how old buildings can find new life. Built in the early 1900s, this downtown treasure has been lovingly restored into a warm and artful retreat that celebrates both history and renewal.
The Peñas were first drawn to the building for its character — the exposed brick, tall ceilings, and original woodwork that seem to whisper stories from another time. “You can feel its history the moment you walk in,” she says. What sealed the deal, though, was the light — the large historic windows that fill the space with warmth throughout the day.

Like many downtown Terrell buildings, this one has worn many hats over the decades. It has been a small department store, a set of local offices, and even storage space at one point. After years of sitting quietly, it was ready for a second act. With care and vision, the owners brought it back to life — preserving its soul while adding all the comforts of modern living.

The renovation was a true labor of love. The original brick, floors, and steel columns were carefully preserved, while new kitchens, baths, HVAC, and soundproofing were added for comfort and efficiency. A favorite detail is the custom wrought-iron work — elegant accents that echo the building’s industrial past while adding timeless charm.

Art and creativity flow through every corner of Hummingbird Place. Guests immediately notice the mix of rustic textures and modern lighting, creating a cozy yet stylish vibe. One of the most talked-about features is the custom mural by local artist Ryan Stalsby, depicting hummingbirds and a little girl watering sunflowers. The mural has become both a symbol of the space and a favorite selfie spot for visitors.

During the renovation, layers of old paint and wallpaper from decades past were uncovered — tiny glimpses into the building’s long life. Rather than covering them completely, a few of those patches were preserved as part of the décor, a quiet nod to the generations who came before.

The name Hummingbird Place was chosen with meaning. The hummingbird, known for its resilience, joy, and renewal, felt like the perfect emblem for this revived space — small but mighty, graceful yet full of energy. The goal was to create a space that radiates warmth, creativity, and connection.

A shared patio courtyard offers a tranquil escape just steps from the bustle of downtown — complete with a fountain, lush touches, and seating that invites morning coffee or evening conversation. Inside, soft textiles, vintage mirrors, and curated décor make guests feel instantly at home.

During the holidays, Hummingbird Place glows with special magic. The owners decorate with warm lights, velvet textures, and festive details that make the whole space feel like a little jewel box in the center of town. With downtown Terrell sparkling outside and the hum of community all around, it’s easy to see why this lovingly restored space has become a favorite stop on the tour — a true symbol of joy, renewal, and the enduring beauty of small-town history.
